Celebrity photographer Sunny Bak will be showing “Beastie Bak” featuring rare black and white photos of The Beastie Boys, May 9-15 at the Ace Hotel and Swim Club, 701 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA 92264, in the Clubhouse. Artist reception will be held on Friday May 13, 7-10PM.
Sunny met the Beasties in the early 80’s in Manhattan. “I was doing fashion photography in New York at the time and a friend of mine introduced me to up and coming rappers Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch and Michael Diamond. We immediately connected so the boys were always hanging out at my studio. From time to time I used the Beasties as stand-ins for fashion shoots, making for some fun and provocative photos—a few of these shots are in this current exhibit.”
The show, which has been to Manhattan, Miami and Los Angeles includes rare and unpublished photos including Adrock, (Adam Horovitz) coming out from a Hollywood tattoo shop, MCA (Adam Yauch) hanging from the marquee at the Palladium on Sunset Boulevard and her best known photograph of the Boys at the Unisphere at the 1963 World’s Fair which graces the centerfold of the album License to Ill (sold 10 million copies). Sunny will be showing never before seen images from the video shoot of Fight For Your Right to Party.
Ms. Bak has photographed celebrities from Madonna to Gregory Peck, Keanu Reeves, Engelbert Humperdink, Gene Simmons, Slayer, 10,000 Maniacs, The Village People, Newsweek, Time and Details Magazine. Sunny shot the landmark photo of the lesbian couple on the cover of Newsweek Magazine June 1993.
Ms. Bak has a photo studio in Venice Beach, CA. She is the President of the Venice Art Crawl, a four time a year happening bringing together art and community in Venice.
