I just listened to Senator Harry Reid, the Minority Leader address the Senate in regards to the enormous impact Donald Trump’s verbiage and actions have had on Americans who seemingly don’t fit the ideology, religion, ethnicity, race, or sexual orientation that Trump and his cohorts have adopted as their poster people. I know. Run on sentence. But, this election has made all of us go through the five stages of grief to arrive at anger plus WTF? And it isn’t just because Hillary didn’t win. It’s my visceral reaction to Trump’s rhetoric pre-election about the quest to take away rights and for me, the LGBT right to marry.
He seems to have backtracked on this. Donald Trump sent a message about his priorities to social conservatives Sunday on “60 Minutesâ€: On abortion, I’ll keep fighting. On gay marriage, not so much.
But his justification was confusing — and likely will be to some of his biggest supporters in the evangelical community. Trump basically said that the Supreme Court’s 17-month-old ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide is over and done with.
Here’s the exchange on gay marriage:
LESLEY STAHL: Do you support marriage equality?
TRUMP: It — it’s irrelevant because it was already settled. It’s law. It was settled in the Supreme Court. I mean it’s done.
STAHL: So even if you appoint a judge that —
TRUMP: It’s done. It — you have — these cases have gone to the Supreme Court. They’ve been settled. And, I’m fine with that.
There was a time when I believed and trusted what the President said publicly. Like a promise made that is supposed to be kept. Remember when your parent told you that you shouldn’t make a promise unless you are going to keep it? As my wife and I said, “Do we need to start the fight to keep our rights intact one more time?†The answer, my friends, is, “YESâ€.
Imagine if Richard Nixon decided to say, “No. I want to take away the Civil Rights Act Would we sit back and let it happen? Of course not. In January of 1973, Roe v. Wade was upheld by the Supreme Court. Imagine if Gerald Ford came along in 1974 and declared, “Nope. I want it overturned.†Would the women of America sat back and let it happen? Of course not.
Well, ladies, there is nothing to stop the advisors to Trump from convincing him and the next Supreme Court Justice to strip the LGBT community of the right to love who we love and marry the person we are thrilled to file our taxes with. So, don’t sit idle. Watch for those subtle signs of discrimination flaring up. You thought it was appalling when a bakery refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay wedding. If we don’t watch it, the days of housing discrimination, racial discriminating, hiring discrimination, and more could return.
So, Donald, I’m taking you at your often quixotic word and behavior that you will NOT go after my LGBT rights. I’m also ready to pick up my protest marching placards if you flip flop again.
