Every year I make a set of New Year’s resolutions. And here it is December 2013 and as far as I can tell, I did not get taller or thinner. I did not go on an Olivia cruise, read the Diary of Miss Anne Lister, religiously peruse every Epochalips article nor did I watch all of the movies I wanted to watch. 2014 will be different. Really. My new year’s resolution is to watch the entire catalogue of lesbian related films from Wolfe Video. I was just on their web site and after going through all of the selections, I can see that I will have my viewing work cut out for me.

To get a head start, I picked the featured film on the Wolfe Video site- Margarita. Who can resist two beautiful women on any DVD cover?

Co-directed by Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert who brought us Finn’s Girl in 2007, the film stars Christine Horne- the Keeper we love to love in Lost Girl Season 4 and Nicola Correia Damude. Nicola is absolutely stunning- a Latino beauty who was just seen in Haven, a campy SyFi channel series.

A recent synopsis stated, “Behind the facade of a beautiful urban home, a combination of complacency and bad investments has left power couple Ben and Gail disconnected, resentful and just about broke. When the cash-strapped yuppies fire their teen-aged daughter’s lesbian Mexican nanny, Margarita, they set off a chain of events that lead to her deportation.” That peaked my interest! Does an employer actually place “Wanted: One Lesbian Mexican Nanny. You may use our hot tub anytime” in the newspaper? If it works this well I might find a kid and advertise!

Nicola Correia Damude is the reason to watch this film. Another reason is the music. The music chosen for the love scene is still haunting me. It is absolutely as erotic and sensual as the face of Nicola as her lover slowly kisses every vertebra.  Two women who use “I love you” as easily as “pass the butter” and yet admit they don’t really know each other. Two women who talk marriage yet one cannot understand why and the other needs it to avoid deportation. It is poignant and perplexing. It is also real.

Every once in a while a film with lesbians jumps the hump and has enough acceptability and inventiveness to be mainstream. I am always looking for that film. Margarita is just that film. Including a main character lesbian and showing her lesbian relationship is not the sole focus of the film. It may be a lesbian movie, but it is really anyone’s story. It is a teenager who declares she is bi-sexual being raised by a nanny. It is a dysfunctional heterosexual marriage on the verge of financial and lifestyle destruction. Big time wake up call. It is the fear of never making a living or being deported.

It is a relationship movie. All of those intricate, awful, difficult and soul searching relationship issues. It is not an epiphany type breakthrough film, but it is worth every rental or purchase penny to spend about 90 minutes with Nicola Correia Damude and the soundtrack. Plus if you listen carefully you just might fall in love with Margarita.

Now onto my 2014 resolution and my quest to stream, download, buy, and rent the Wolfe lesbian video catalogue. Anyone else wish to join me in this quest? I’ll bring the popcorn.
